Mid-Season Analysis – Spanish La Liga

Blog Post - La Liga Midpoint (1.14.14)

With half the season completed in all 3 major leagues, Draftsoccer  takes a look at where the reigning champions are and what their chances to repeat are…

Spanish La Liga – following their 15-point winning margin last year, Barcelona is keeping the pressure on the rest of the league and currently in first place.  However, it’s becoming a tighter and tighter race as the weeks progress, though that may be somewhat due to Lionel Messi’s absence for a number of games.  They’ll have to maintain their momentum, and maybe even pick up a little steam to ensure they see off the two Madrid teams (Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid) in order to capture their 23rd La Liga title.

Chances of Winning League – with Lionel Messi back, Neymar in some excellent form, the chances are good for Barcelona, especially in league with just a couple of elite teams.   They key dates remaining will be the Classico in Madrid on March 23rd and the final game of the season at home in the Camp Nou to Atletico Madrid on May 18th.

Chances of Champions League position – unlike their counterparts in England (Manchester United), Garardo Martino’s men are pretty much a lock for securing a Champions League place for next year.   Already 16 points ahead of 5th place Villarreal, Barca would have to field Barcelona B for the rest of the season, and even then they might still squeak 4th.
